Feminist Fatale | Seattle Boudoir Photography

What I love most about being self-employed is that I have the luxury of taking my business on the road! I love to travel, so I try to take at least a few trips every year! I was honored that Noelle booked with me, rather than a Seattle-based boudoir photographer, and I love it up there so much that I am definitely open to going back up from time to time to do more shoots… hint hint.

I asked Noelle to write a little sumthin sumthin for this post. Considering the fact that she’s a freelance writer, and an outspoken feminist, it seemed more appropriate that I allow her to describe the experience in her own words. So, here we go!

“The ability to make choices for yourself is the inherent goal for feminism. The choice of what to do with our bodies was not always ours to make and that’s where boudoir photography comes into play.

Not only do we have the choice to take these photos – we get to feel good about ourselves while we do it. It is encouraging (albeit slightly nerve-wracking) both physically and emotionally because we are placed in front of a camera with no protection.

We are literally stripped down. In the purest sense. Clothed, partially clothed, or completely naked – that is your choice to make.

Taking photos while in this particular state is empowering. You’re connected and disconnected from your body at the same time.

When I took these photos, I was admittedly very nervous. Although I’d known Nena for quite a while, it took some encouragement from her to really open up and be myself.

It was almost laughable because I never felt like myself without clothing as a shield. I felt disconnected from my body because I was not used to seeing it so bare in front of another person.

But simultaneously, I felt a deeper connection with my body for the same reason. It’s somewhat of a release to feel comfortable in your own skin with another person observing you. And not just observing you – taking close-up photos of you in your most vulnerable state.

So, I recommend this: to everyone toying with the idea of taking boudoir photos – whether they’re for your significant other or just to feel good about yourself – do it. If you think it will make you any less of a feminist, it won’t.

The choice is yours and that is the only thing that should matter.”
